In March 2020 we decided to set a business goal, to be carbon neutral by the end of the year. We set this goal because we believe that the current climate and ecological crisis is the most important issue of our time. We wanted to set a precedent in our profession in our locality and prove that we all can contribute to making a difference. We wanted to take responsibility for our actions and ensure that we are on the right side of history. We wanted to give back and help protect the future of our planet. We did this in 2020 and in 2022 we decided to go further.

1% for the Planet

1% for the Planet is a non-profit organisation where businesses all over the world commit to donating 1% of their annual sales — not profit… sales! — to environmental non-profit organisations. These charities are focussed on bettering the planet through climate advocacy, food policy, wildlife restoration, and much, much more. Through active partnerships between businesses and charities, this global network engages in direct, traceable action…..its accountable!

And this means consumers do, too; every time an individual purchases a product or service that brandishes the 1% for the Planet logo, a portion of the proceeds for that product or service go towards protecting and restoring our planet.

Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, members have given hundreds of millions of pounds to approved Environmental Partners to date. Today, 1% for the Planet’s global network consists of thousands of businesses, individuals and environmental partners working toward a better future for all.

Only 3% of philanthropic giving worldwide goes to environmental causes

1% for the Planet is on a mission to change that. The membership model drives critical philanthropic support to address the most urgent environmental issues of our time. The network exemplifies the power of collective action as we bring together individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations around the world to support people and the planet. When we all work together, 1% adds up.

Robinson Udale and 1% for the Planet

Ever since we started in business, Robinson Udale has supported and encouraged social and environmental action. It has always been an important part of Rob’s business and personal life, whether that be in taking medical and school supplies to Africa, planting trees and creating woodlands in Cumbria, or direct giving to organisations involved in restoring natural habitat across Europe, to name but a few.

But we want to go further. We want to foster a company that takes responsibility to help protect our planet; that is accountable, and that inspires others to think and do more. As the great thinker and leader Mahatma Gandhi once said “be the change you wish to see in the world”
